La Zenia, Spain: Beaches, Zenia Boulevard and Local Guide

La Zenia is one of those places on the Costa Blanca that is easy to underestimate until you actually spend some time here.

It is not a traditional Spanish old town filled with historic buildings and narrow medieval streets. La Zenia is different. It is about Mediterranean beaches, sunshine, outdoor living, restaurants, shopping and an easy holiday atmosphere.

And for us, it is more than another place we visited for a few days. We have our own home here, so we know La Zenia from a different perspective. We have walked these streets countless times, spent days on the beach, shopped and eaten at Zenia Boulevard and even celebrated Christmas Day on the sand.

That is why this guide is not just a list of things you can find online. It is our personal introduction to a part of Spain that has become very familiar to us.

Where Is La Zenia?

La Zenia is located on the southern Costa Blanca in Alicante province, between Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada. It forms part of Orihuela Costa, a popular coastal area made up of several neighbouring communities and beaches.

One of the advantages of staying here is the location. La Zenia is well connected to nearby places such as Cabo Roig, Playa Flamenca and Torrevieja, making it a convenient base for exploring this part of the Costa Blanca.

Alicante Airport is approximately 50 km away, and the journey by car normally takes around 40–50 minutes, depending on traffic.

The Mediterranean Sea is on one side of La Zenia, while the large Zenia Boulevard shopping centre sits slightly inland. Between them are residential areas, restaurants, bars and holiday accommodation, so most of what you need is concentrated within a relatively small area.

La Zenia Beach – Our Favourite Part of the Area

You cannot really talk about La Zenia without starting with the Mediterranean.

The best-known beach here is Cala Bosque, more commonly called La Zenia Beach. It is a sandy beach framed by rocky sections of coastline, with coastal paths and viewpoints nearby.

One of the things we particularly like about this part of the Costa Blanca is that you do not have to spend the whole day in one place. Put your shoes on and follow the coast and the scenery quickly changes between sandy bays, rocky stretches and viewpoints overlooking the Mediterranean.

Some of our favourite moments in La Zenia have actually been the simplest ones – walking beside the sea in the evening as the temperature begins to drop and the beaches become quieter.

During the warmer months, La Zenia Beach naturally becomes much busier. If you prefer a more peaceful atmosphere, we recommend visiting earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon.

One thing we like about this coastline is that you do not have to spend the whole day lying on the same piece of sand.

Walk along the coast and the scenery changes quickly. There are sandy bays, rocky areas, viewpoints and paths overlooking the Mediterranean.

It is worth putting your shoes on and simply walking.

Some of our favourite moments here have nothing to do with organised attractions. It can be as simple as walking beside the sea in the evening when the temperature drops and the beach starts becoming quieter.

During the warmer months, naturally, the beaches become much busier. If you prefer a quieter experience, come earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon.

Christmas Day on La Zenia Beach – Yes, Really

One of the strangest and most enjoyable La Zenia traditions happens on 25 December.

Forget snow, frozen windscreens and sitting indoors all day.

Every Christmas Day, thousands of people gather at Cala Bosque for the famous La Zenia Christmas Day beach party, which is widely described as Europe’s largest Christmas Day beach party.

And we have actually been there ourselves.

People arrive wearing Santa hats and Christmas costumes, bring food and drinks and celebrate Christmas beside the Mediterranean.

The atmosphere is difficult to explain until you experience it.

You look around and see Christmas decorations and Santa Claus – but behind them are blue skies, sand and the Mediterranean Sea.

It certainly does not feel like a normal European Christmas.

For us, this is one of the things that makes La Zenia genuinely different.

Plenty of places in Spain have good beaches. Plenty have shopping centres. But celebrating Christmas Day with thousands of people on a Mediterranean beach is something you remember.

If you happen to be staying around Orihuela Costa over Christmas, it is worth experiencing at least once.

Zenia Boulevard – Much More Than Shopping

The other major attraction in La Zenia is impossible to miss: Zenia Boulevard.

If you imagine a dark indoor shopping centre, this is not really that.

Much of Zenia Boulevard has an open-air Mediterranean feel, with palm trees, terraces, restaurants, fountains and colourful public spaces.

It is a place where you can easily spend several hours even if shopping is not the main purpose of your visit.

There is a large selection of international and Spanish shops, fashion stores, cafés and restaurants.

The centre works particularly well in the evening.

Instead of simply going somewhere to buy something and leaving, people meet here for dinner, drinks and entertainment.

Families also have plenty to keep children occupied.

There are play and entertainment areas, and during different periods of the year the centre organises events and activities.

For us, one of the biggest advantages of La Zenia is having somewhere like this so close to home. If the weather is not ideal for the beach, or you simply want an evening away from the coast, Zenia Boulevard is an easy option.

There is also a large restaurant selection.

You can find everything from a quick coffee or snack to an evening meal, which makes Boulevard useful if a group cannot agree on what everyone wants to eat.

Eating and Drinking Around La Zenia

Food in La Zenia reflects the international character of the area.

You are not limited to traditional Spanish restaurants. There are bars, cafés and restaurants serving food from many different countries.

Naturally, we would still recommend trying Spanish food while you are here. But sometimes on a longer stay you simply want something different, and La Zenia makes that easy.

At Zenia Boulevard we have also visited Muerde la Pasta, an all-you-can-eat style restaurant that can be a practical option for families or anyone arriving hungry after a day out.

For us, this variety is part of the attraction of living here rather than simply spending a weekend here.

Where to Stay in La Zenia

There are apartments, villas, holiday homes and hotels throughout La Zenia and the surrounding Orihuela Costa.

If you prefer a traditional hotel, the most obvious option is Hotel Servigroup La Zenia.

It occupies an impressive position directly beside the Mediterranean, between two sandy beaches.

The four-star superior hotel has sea-view rooms, outdoor swimming pools and a wellness centre with a heated pool, gym and other facilities.

Its biggest advantage, however, is the location. You are right beside the sea.

For travellers who prefer the services of a large hotel, it is one of the most prominent places to stay in La Zenia.

Our Own Place in La Zenia – Amapolas III

There is another option – and this one is personal.

We own a holiday home in the Amapolas III urbanisation, so when we say we know this area, we genuinely spend time here rather than visiting only to write an article.

The location is one of the reasons we like it so much.

From our place, it is approximately a six-minute walk to Zenia Boulevard and around a 15-minute walk to the beach.

That means you can leave the car behind for much of your holiday.

Boulevard is close enough for an evening meal, shopping or drinks, while the Mediterranean is still within comfortable walking distance.

For us, this balance works particularly well. We are close to the busy parts of La Zenia when we want them, but we do not have to stay directly inside the busiest tourist area.
