La Grotta bar terrace above swimmers and turquoise water

La Grotta Corfu is a small rocky bay in Paleokastritsa, with a beach bar built into the hillside above the water. We visited during our Corfu trip and photographed the entrance, terraces and inlet as the evening light caught the cliffs. If you enjoy little coves between rocks, this is a lovely place to add to your route.

The practical part is straightforward: the large Paleokastritsa sign is nearby, there is parking in the same area, and it is only a couple of minutes’ walk to the La Grotta entrance. The steps down to the water are a separate part of the walk.

Finding the La Grotta Entrance

The La Grotta sign is beside the road, above the bay. From there, the route takes you down towards the bar and the sea. It is worth pausing before going down: once you reach the water, the tall rock walls make the place feel tucked away from the road above.

There are plenty of steps, so the short distance from the parking area does not mean the whole route is flat. Wear shoes you are happy walking in, especially if you intend to explore the rocks beside the water. Allow extra time for the climb back up.

The Paleokastritsa Sign and Parking

Our photograph with the large “I love Palaiokastritsa” letters was taken completely nearby — only a couple of minutes on foot from the La Grotta entrance. It is an easy photo stop to combine with your visit rather than a separate journey.

The parking area is in this same spot. In our experience, spaces were generally available, which made stopping here convenient. That is our experience rather than a guarantee for every summer afternoon; leave yourself some flexibility when the area is busy.

Down by the Water at La Grotta

At the bottom, the setting changes from roadside greenery to stone steps, large rocks and blue-green water. Wooden platforms sit close to the sea, while the bar terraces rise behind them. There is no broad strip of sand here: the rocks and narrow inlet are the main attraction.

We liked the different viewpoints. Near the steps you can look back towards the terrace; a little further round, the rock faces frame the opening to the sea. Late in the day, the tops of the cliffs caught warm sunlight while the water below stayed in shade.

Swimming and the Rocky Shore

Our photographs show people swimming close to the rocks and below the bar. Entry into the sea here is quite different from walking in from a sandy beach. Check the access points and conditions on the day, and stay clear of moving boats around the platforms. You can also enjoy the setting from the shore without going into the water.

The La Grotta Beach Bar Terraces

The bar makes good use of the hillside, with tables, white parasols, loungers and seating spread across terraces above the inlet. The combination of pale furniture, stone walls and greenery gives you plenty to look at before you even reach the sea.

Our photographs show the seating and atmosphere during our visit. We have not added drink prices or minimum spending claims because we did not record a menu for this guide. Check the current menu and any conditions for loungers or reserved seating before settling in.

La Grotta Seen from the Sea

We also saw La Grotta during our small-boat trip along the Paleokastritsa coast. From out on the water, you can see how the inlet sits between the cliffs, with the bar terraces tucked into the hillside.

Boat Rental Near La Grotta

Beside the entrance, we photographed the Michalas signs advertising boats, speedboats, jet skis and regular departures to isolated beaches. It is a useful place to ask about local boat options, departure times and what is included.

A Self-Drive Boat Rental Elsewhere on Corfu

If you want to reserve an actual boat rental through GetYourGuide, we found the Premium Boat Rental without Skipper. This departs from Sidari, not La Grotta or Paleokastritsa. It is an option for a separate north-coast outing around Canal d’Amour and Cape Drastis, rather than a rental for exploring this inlet.

The listing includes a two-hour rental and a boat-handling briefing. Check the current fuel charges, deposit, permitted cruising area and conditions before booking. We have not used this rental ourselves.

The Hillside Hotel Above La Grotta

The nearby hotel we noticed above the road is in the area of Paleokastritsa Palace – Adults Only, previously known as Paleo ArtNouveau. The hotel’s own website places the property directly above La Grotta. It is a useful nearby option to investigate if you want to stay close to this part of Paleokastritsa.

La Grotta and the James Bond Story

Corfu was used for For Your Eyes Only (1981), starring Roger Moore as James Bond. You may hear La Grotta described as one of the film locations, but we found conflicting accounts and could not confirm a scene filmed in this particular inlet.

Combine La Grotta with the Monastery

Paleokastritsa Monastery is another worthwhile stop in the same coastal area. It gives you a different perspective, looking out over the bays from the headland. We would leave time for both rather than rush straight from one photo stop to the next. Check the monastery’s current visiting hours when planning your day.
