There are places that look almost unreal in photographs, and Laguna Rosa in Torrevieja is one of them. We had seen the famous pink salt lake many times online, but seeing that colour with our own eyes was completely different.
Laguna Rosa – Torrevieja’s Pink Lake
Laguna Rosa forms part of the Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja Natural Park on Spain’s Costa Blanca. Its unusual pink colour is linked to the lake’s extremely salty water and microorganisms that thrive in this environment. The exact shade changes with the light, season and conditions, so it will not always look equally pink.
Our First Impression
What surprised us most was how different the landscape feels from the busy resorts nearby. Torrevieja is only a short drive away, yet around the lagoon everything suddenly feels open, quiet and almost otherworldly. For us, this is one of the best places around Torrevieja to watch the sunset. As the sun drops, the light becomes softer and the pink tones of the lagoon can look even richer, while the pale salt and evening sky make the whole landscape especially photogenic. If you can choose when to visit, we would come in the late afternoon and stay for sunset.
Can You Swim in the Pink Lake?
No. Laguna Rosa is part of a protected natural park and swimming or bathing in the lagoon is not permitted. It is better to treat this as a nature and photography stop rather than a swimming destination. Staying on permitted paths also helps protect the fragile salt-lagoon environment.
Parking and Getting There
We visited by car, which is the easiest way to combine Laguna Rosa with Torrevieja, La Zenia and other Costa Blanca stops. We parked on a nearby street and walked the last short section towards the lagoon. There are several streets and access points around this large area, but always check the local signs, stay out of restricted zones and do not drive into the protected park. Around sunset it can get noticeably busier, so arriving a little earlier gives you more time to park, walk over and choose a good spot for photos.
When Does the Lake Look Pinkest?
Do not expect exactly the same colour as heavily edited social-media photographs. The appearance depends on sunlight, weather, water conditions and the time of year. Strong daylight can make the colour much easier to see, while cloudy conditions may leave it looking more muted. For photographs, changing your viewing angle can make a surprisingly large difference.
Wildlife Around the Lagoon
The lagoon is also a habitat for birds, so it is worth looking beyond the colour of the water. We spotted wildlife among the reeds while walking around the edge.

Is Laguna Rosa Worth Visiting?
Yes, especially if you are already staying around Torrevieja or the southern Costa Blanca. It is not an attraction where you need to spend half a day. For us, its appeal was precisely that it was an easy stop with a landscape completely different from the beaches, promenades and towns nearby.
